Police in a drive arrested five suspected robbers from different parts of the city on Sunday. The arrestees were identified as Alamgir Mia, 32, Labu, 37, Sumon, 28, Rakib, 24, and Dilip Dey, 45. Biplab Kumar Sarkar, deputy commissioner (Tejgaon division) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, disclosed about the arrest at a press briefing at Tejgaon office at noon. The DMP DC said a gang of robbers, numbering 8-10, swooped on the house of an Italian expatriate at West Kafrul under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar thana on July 13 and looted valuables, including gold and silver ornaments and cash worth Tk 24 lakh after keeping the house inmates hostage at gunpoint. A case was filed in this connection with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on that day. Later, police conducted a drive in Basila area under Mohammadpur thana and arrested Sumon on July 17, Biplab added. Acting on Sumon’s confessional statements, police conducted simultaneous drives in different parts of the capital, Keraniganj and Savar, and arrested the rest four. Police also recovered 7 tolas of gold and 18 tolas of silver ornaments, Tk 8,500 in cash, one camera, five mobile phone sets and three sharp weapons from their possessions. Of the arrestees, Dilip is a gold shop owner in Savar, and he bought the looted gold from the robbers, the DC added. Biplab said the robbers also had a plan to commit robberies in the city during the eid vacation, he said. Of the arrestees, Alamgir served seven years’ imprisonment in a case filed also for robbery, while Sumon four years and Rakib several years.
