Mobile courts of Chittagong District Administration yesterday fined 30 businesses, including five superstores, about Tk 6.46 lakh in the port city on different charges including hiking of prices of essential commodities.
The court, led by Executive Magistrate Tahmilur Rahman, fined five chain shops-Agora in Prabartok, The Grocer, and Khulshi Mart in Khulshi, Meena Bazar in Sholoshahar and Shwapno in Gol Pahar Tk 1 lakh each.
The five were fined for selling products at hiked up prices and also selling rotten and stale items, said the magistrate.
At Agora, per kilogramme of green chili was being sold at Tk 80, brinjal at Tk 55, tomato at Tk 65 and sugar at Tk 63 whereas their wholesale prices are Tk 15, Tk 25, Tk 35 and Tk 50 respectively, he said.
Rotten meat and fishes in a stale condition were found at The Grocer, he said, adding that green chili, tomato, gram and sugar were also being sold at higher prices.
Khulshi Mart was fined for hiking the prices of gram, brinjal, sugar, garlic and tomato, the magistrate added.
Per kg of sugar was being sold at Tk 68 at Meena Bazar whereas it is sold at Tk 50 by wholesalers, Rahman said, adding that date-expired honey as well as face-wash were also found there.
A kg of beef was being sold at Tk 650 at the shop, he further said.
Swapno was selling per kg of gram at Tk 105, sugar at Tk 68 and green chili at Tk 65, the magistrate added.
Meanwhile, three other mobile courts fined 25 other businesses a total of Tk 1,46,500 at Seaport and Failyatoli Kitchen Market and in Bibirhat and Aturar Depot areas for selling products at hiked up prices, keeping date-expired products and not displaying price list, said a press release. 11

Mahbubur Rahman, an official of the district’s Food Department, said they have so far enlisted 90 farmers for the public procurement that started in the district last week.
Some farmers alleged that they had faced troubles in opening bank accounts in Janata, Sonali and Agrani banks, he said.
Paikgachha upazila Food Inspector Manirul Islam Siddique said a target has been set to procure 335 tonnes of paddy from the upazila at Tk 23 per kg.
