As many as 5 shops were gutted when a big fire broke out in Polerhat Bazar within Daibanjahati Union Parishad under Morrelganj Upazila in Bagerhat district on Saturday noon. The loss by fire is estimated to be Tk.10 lakh, according to a primary assessment.
It is learnt from the locals and shop-keepers that at noon the fire originated from a shop of quilt and mattress belonging to one Mamun Khan spread to its adjacent shops and within moments.
On seeing the flame of fire the locals and the shop-keepers tried to extinguish the fire, but in vain.
By this time being informed of the matter 2 fire service units-one from Morrelganj (Upazila headquarters) and the other from Bagerhat district town rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after a long fighting for one hour with the help of the locals.
But in spite of that all the five shops with their all belongings were completely burnt to ashes.
The affected shop-keepers are (1) Shamim Hawladar, owner of a grocery shop, (2) Mamun Khan, owner of a quilt and mattress shop, (3) Altaf Beg, owner of a tea-stall, (4) Nazrul Shaikh, owner of a shoe-shop and (5) Suvash Sheel, owner of a hair cutting saloon.
They were the tenets of one Abzal Hossain of the Bazar.
Md. Monirul Islam, Officer-in-charge of Morrelganj PS visited the fire affected area of the Bazar.
The cause of the fire incident is yet to be ascertained, according to the opinion of Eunus Ali, Station Officer of Morrelganj Fire Service Unit.
