Noting that 5 percent budget deficit is not a big deal, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday urged people not to be worried about it and sought the cooperation of all in implementing the budget.
“Please, you all help us…we’ll be able to implement the budget,” she said taking part in the general discussion on the proposed budget for fiscal 2015-16.
In the proposed budget, Hasina said, there is a five percent deficit and this is not a big deal. “It happens each year, we can implement the budget,” she said.
In this connection, the Prime Minister mentioned that this year’s ADP implementation rate is above 95 percent.
To have a strong and sustainable economic growth, Hasina said, the government is taking programmes for making the rural economy more vibrant. “We want to strengthen the rural economy…the more rural economy expands the more the national economy will have footing on a solid ground. We’re taking various projects keeping that view in mind,” she told the House.
About the capital market, Hasina said the government has taken various steps for resolving the capital market problems. “It’s not true that we didn’t take actions against the culprits, we’ve taken punitive measurers against the culprits of the capital market,” she said.
The Prime Minister mentioned that many of the culprits are now out of the country. “They left the country … we’ll take actions against them whenever they’ll be back.”
In the last couple of years, the government took various steps for the development of the capital market, she said adding, “We’ve also changed the law to strengthen the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission.”
Responding to Opposition Leader Raushon Ershad’s criticisms, the Prime Minister said there is a coal-based power plant in Dinajpur and it is situated in a densely-populated area. “Let me ask one question what is the adverse effect of that power plant in that area. Can anybody point out any sign of negative effect, no,” she said.
Hasina said, Bangladesh is a country that belongs to all. “Don’t we have the affection for saving the country and the Sundarbans? Who does have the more affection than me? ” she said.
She said, if there is any possibility of adverse effect on the Sundarbans due to the Rampal power plant the government must not have gone for constructing this plant. “Where’s the Sundarbans situated and were the Rampal power plant is? A section people are simply making noise. They cannot accept Bangladesh’s development.”
About terrorism, the Prime Minister said terrorists and militants would not be allowed to use Bangladesh soil. “We’ve taken a zero tolerance policy against terrorism and militancy.”
