The government rendered legal aid to 5,07,040 poor people free of cost in last 10 years, said a press release issued by the Law Ministry on Monday.
The service was provided through National Legal Aid Services Organization, a legal aid body of the government, from 2009.
At the same time, the legal aid body recovered Tk 35,36,13,422.
The Legal Aid Act was enacted in the year 2000
aiming at ensuring legal rights and to provide legal assistance to the people who are financially indigent, helpless and incapable of access to justice due to various socio-economic reasons.
In last ten years, the organization provided legal aid to 3,84,823 persons through 64 district level legal aid offices, 20 thousand 92 persons through Supreme Court legal aid office, 83 thousand 918 persons through help line call centre No. 16430 and 18 thousand 207 persons through the labourers legal aid cells of Dhaka and Chattogram.
At the same time the organization disposed of one lakh 26 thousand and 492 cases.
The help line call centre of the National Legal Aid Services Organization, 16430, is now open round the 24 hours to provide legal assistance to the people, also read the press release. Earlier the call centre service was available in the office hour, but due to the corona virus outbreak the service is given for 24 hours.
