5 killed in ‘gunfights’

Five persons were killed in separate gunfights with the law enforcement agencies in three upazilas of Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar districts on Sunday.
In Bandarban, police recovered three bodies from Baishari in Naikhongchhari upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased are: Anwar Hossain alias Anaia, 27, son of Abdus Sobhan from Chainga Bazar, Parvez Hossain Bappi, 23, son of Syed Hossain of Eidgar Kodalia Kata and Abdul Hamid, 23, from Gorjonia Borobil area.
The three were accused in a number of cases, including that of robbery and abduction, filed with Naikhongchhari and Ramu police stations, the law enforcement said.
Getting information from local people, police recovered the bodies from Narisbunia PHP-11 No. Bagan area in the morning, said Baishari Police Camp In-charge Habibur Rahman.
Superintendent of Police Zakir Hossain Majumder said that the three were reportedly robbers and they might have been killed in a gunfight between two groups of robbers for establishing supremacy in the area. In Cox’s Bazar, reported gunfights between police and ‘criminals’ on Sunday left two dead in Maheshkhali and Teknaf upazilas.
In Maheshkhali, Mohammad Karim Prokash, alias Mahmud Karim, son of one Yusuf Ali was killed in a gunfight with police in Shaplar Deba area, said Pradip Kumar Das, Officer-in-Charge of Maheshkhali Police Station.
Claiming the deceased a terrorist, the OC said that he was an accused in several cases, including robbery and murder.
On information from local people, police conducted a raid in the area early morning. Sensing the presence of policemen, the terrorists opened fire on them, forcing the law enforcers to shoot back, triggering the gunfight, Pradip said.
After the gunfight, police recovered the body of Karim from the spot, he added.
In Teknaf, Imran Hossain Prokash, son of one Azizul Haque from Paschim Sikdarpara, was killed in what police called a gunfight with them at Dorgarchhora.
Hearing that a gang of drug traders gathered in the area for yaba trading, police conducted a drive there, said Ranjit Kumar Barua, Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Police Station.
Sensing the presence of police, the OC claimed, the drug traders opened fire on them, prompting them to fire back.
After the drug traders fled the scene, the police team spotted the bullet-hit body of Imran, the OC said.
Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight, he added.
Police recovered two firearms, a few rounds of bullet and 7,000 yaba pills from the spot, OC Ranjit said.
The law enforcement’s versions about the incidents could not be verified independently as no versions were available immediately either from any witness or from the members of victims’ families.
