Landslides triggered by heavy rain again killed at least five people in Khagrachhari and Moulvibazar districts on Sunday.
Three people, including two siblings, were killed and two others injured in separate landslides in Ramgarh and Lakkhichhara upazilas of Khagrachhari yesterday morning.
The deceased are Nurunnabi, 14, and his younger brother Mohammad Hossain, 10, sons of Mostafa from Budongpara village under Ramgarh upazila and five- year-old Nipun Chakma, daughter of Debobroto Chakma of Jatindra Karbaripara in Lakkhichhara upazila.
Office-in-Charge of Ramgarh Police Station Shariful Islam said the incident took place due to the torrential rain. Mostafa’s another son was injured in the incident.
In Moulvibazar, a woman and her teenage daughter were killed in a landslide at Dimai village under Borolekha upazila this morning.
The deceased are Afia Begum, 35, wife of Abdus Sattar from Dimai village, and her daughter Fahmida Begum, 13.
Officer-in-Charge of Borolekha Police Station Sahidur Rahman said they died on the spot after a big chunk of mud fell on their house. Later, the locals recovered their bodies.
A low over the Bay of Bengal led to the worst rains in decades that caused landslides in five southeastern districts from late Monday to early Wednesday. The death toll in the disaster stands at 159 until Saturday.
Meanwhile, heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning since Sunday morning has increased risk of further landslides and sufferings of people.
Such heavy rains were not seen in the last five days in Rangamati where so far at least 114 people died in landslides that hit the district on June 12.
District administration urged the people who are still living in risky areas to move to shelters immediately, said district administration’s disaster control room spokesperson KM Ikhtiar Uddin.
The rains will further heighten the sufferings of the local people and those living in the shelters.
Due to the heavy rains, road repair work is being hampered as well and accessibility to other areas is being compromise.
