5 JMB men get 7 yrs jail in K`chhari

A special tribunal here on Saturday sentenced seven members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to seven years jail in two separate cases.
The convicts are Abdur Rahim alias Jahid Hossain, second in-command of JMB’s Chittagong unit and a resident of Sutna village of Debidwar upazila of Comilla, Delwar Hossain, M Yunus and
Shamsu Miah of Shantipur village of Matiranga upazila of Khagrachhari, and Shamim Ahmed of Sikarpur village of Burichong upazila of Comilla.
Of them, Shamim was tried in absentia. The court also fined them Tk 2,000 each, in default, to suffer two years more imprisonment.
Talking to reporters, public prosecutor advocate Bidhan Kanungo said a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-7 conducted a drive at a JMB training camp in Shantipur area of Matiranga upazila on the night of September 27, 2009 and arrested four JMB men-Jahid, Delwar, Yunus and Shamsu.
Later, two separate cases were filed against five people, including the four JMB members, with Matiranga Police Station under the Arms and Explosive Substances Acts.
On December 11, 2009, Officer-in-Charge of the police station M Mizanur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against them to a court.
After examining witnesses and documents, Judge of Khagrachhari Special Tribunal and District and Session Judge’s court M Enamul Haque Bhuiyan handed down the verdict.
