5 injured in BCL factions clash at Textile University

At least five activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have been injured in a clash between two rival groups of the organization at Shahid Aziz Hall of Bangladesh Textile University in the city’s Tejgaon area in the small hours of Sunday.
The members of the law enforcing agencies recovered huge iron rods, sticks and machetes from the hall, police said.
Quoting the witnesses, Mohammed Salauddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tejgaon Industrial Police Station said that the clash started around 2:30 am when two factions of Chhatra League, the student affiliate of ruling Awami League, tried to get
students supporting them into the Shahid Aziz Hall.
A turf battle between rival BCL factions headed by its unit President of Aziz Hall Shahadat Hossain Shishir and General Secretary Najmus Shakib Khan has been on for a while, a fashion design student of the university, the police official said.
Tensions rose when both factions tried to take new students of the university’s 41st batch under their wings and push them into the Aziz Hall, he said.
 “The main gate of the hall was locked and students heard firing, at least 10 to 12 bullets were fired,” the OC said.
None of the students was seriously injured and the situation was under control, he said.
The Hall committee was defunct since at night. But, there was no official announcement over dissolution of the Hall committee, sources said.
