5 Indian nationals get 3-yr jail in gold smuggling case

A Jessore court on Sunday sentenced five Indian nationals to three years rigorous imprisonment in a gold smuggling case that was filed in 2014.
The convicts are – Bijoy Kumar, son of Chand Lal Bajaj, Kamal, son of Ashok Odhin, Ram Kumar Golabmal, son of Golablam Khotrir, Rohit Ashok, son of Ashok Radharam Malani and Rakesh Laxman, son of Hotchand, hailing from Nagpur and Ahmedabad.
The court also fined them TK 10,000 each. In default, they have to suffer one month’s imprisonment.
According to prosecution, on secret information a team of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive intercepted a Jessore-bound BRTC bus and arrested five Indian citizens along with 36 gold bars, weighing 4 kg and worth TK 2.2 crore, from Pulerhat Akij pump area on Jessore-Benapole road on 22 June 2014.
Later Habildar Azizul Haque of 26-BGB battalion filed a case in this connection.
Sub-inspector Shahinur Rahman, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge-sheet accusing five of them.
