5 hurt in cops-dacoits gunfight, 7 held

Five persons including three policemen and two dacoits were injured in a gunfight between the police and a gang of dacoits in Chittagong city early Wednesday.
Seven dacoits including four females were arrested with firearms and sharp weapons in connection with a robbery incident at two jewelry shops at GPO intersection in the port city during overnight raids conducted in three areas of the port city.
Bullet-hit dacoits were identified as Mohammad Hasan Jamadar,32 and Mohammad Manik alias Kana Manik,28. The injured dacoits were admitted to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital, Kotwali Police said. Three policemen including a sub inspector and two constables were also injured during the gunfight, Mohiuddin Selim, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali police said.
One revolver, one single barrel gun, three bullets and five cartridges were recovered from their possessions, during the drive,.
Based on secret information, two dacoits were picked up by police from Khilgaon area of Dhaka on Dec 14 last and handed them over to Kotwali thana police.
As police went to arrest dacoits at Bridgeghata area of Fringi bazaar under Kotwali thana early today the dacoits opened fire on them triggering a gunfight between the police and dacoits.
On Saturday night, at least 10 people, including a jewelry shop owner, were injured as they tried to stop robbers from breaking into jewelry shops at GPO intersection in the city.
