Five people sustained minor injuries when a speedboat turned turtle in the middle of the Padma river on Shimulia-Kathalia route near Louhajang on Wednesday.
Liakat Ali, officer-in-charge of Louhajang Police Station, said a Kathalbari-bound speedboat with 20 passengers overturned in the middle of the river due to strong current around 9:15 am. Locals on other speedboats rushed there and managed to rescue all the passengers. Among the passengers, five sustained injuries, the OC said. Meanwhile, plying of all river vessels including speedboat and launch has been suspended after the incident due to strong current in the river. “The ban will remain effective until the situation goes normal,” said Mohammad Khaled, additional general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC). However, three to four ferries were plying slowing in the route.
