Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested two members of the banned Ansarulla Bangla Team and three Huji men in Dhaka on Wednesday and Thursday.
The members of Ansarulla were preparing to fly for Syria to join with the Islamic State militants. They have been identified as Asif Adnan, 26, and Fazle Elahi Tanzil, 24.
Adnan has completed his graduation in Economics from Dhaka University while Tanzil has done his A-Level.
The three Huji men have been identified as Saiful Islam, 24, Shafiqul Islam Shafiq, 35 and Mohammad Hasanullah, 24 were arrested from Rampura at 7:00pm of Wednesday.
DB police detained them with a large number of explosives on Wednesday night, Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesman Monirul Islam disclosed it in a press briefing on Thursday morning.
Monirul said: “They (the JMB men) were detained on the basis of their documents found from them.”
“They were planning to take armed training abroad for going to Afghanistan and Myanmar with the help of an expatriate,” he said.
He said, “We will come to know about the details after interrogating them on remand.”
Monirul Islam, Joint-Commissioner (media) of Metropolitan police, told reporters at a press conference that the two suspected JMB men were actually members of Ansarulla Bangla Team.
Asif Adnan and Fazle Elahi Tanjil confessed their involvement with the Ansarulla Bangla Team upon primary interrogation, the DB official said.
They were picked up as per statement given by one Noki, a detained member of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), who was arrested recently, he added.
“Asif was arrested from Eskaton and Tanjil from Shegunbagicha in the capital in the early hours of Thursday,” he said.
“They were inspired by the latest al-Qaeda video released recently on the web and was planning to wage Jihad in Bangladesh to establish Islamic rule.”
