5 get bail after decade in jails

Five, including a Garo youth, have been granted bail by the High Court after spending more than a decade in jail. The court also ordered that cases against two others be completed within three months.
The seven suspects had been represented in court by Supreme Court Legal Aid Panel Lawyer Behesti Marzan.
Five oif them who were granted bail are Rasel Sheikh from Kushtia, ‘Masud’ from Motijheel, ‘Babu’ from Gazipur’s Board Bazar, ‘Parvez’ from Brahmanbarhia and Garo youth ‘Liton’.
Badda’s Saidur Rahman and Keraniganj’s Rajib Hossain were not granted bail because they had previously confessed to murder before the court. However, the court ordered their trials to be completed within the next three months. Lawyer Behesti Marzan brought the cases of these seven detainees before the court after a television channel reported on them. The court of Justices M Enayetur Rahim and JBM Hassan called the seven for a hearing on Dec 15 last year and issued a rule asking why they should not be granted bail.
All seven had been imprisoned without trial at the Kashimpur-2 jail for more than a decade.
Saidur and Rahib Hossain had confessed to murdering their wives in court and were thus not granted bail, said Behesti Marzan. Rasel Sheikh, the son of Kushtia Sadar Upazila resident Ayub Sheikh, has been in prison since 2004 over a case filed against him at the Kafrul Police Station on Dec 11 that year.
Sheikh has appeared before the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court-3 on 55 working days , but his trial did not start. Saidur Rahman, the son of Badda’s Adorshonnagar resident Taibur Rahman, has been in prison since Sep 6, 2005. Saidur has appeared before Dhaka Women and Children’s Court – 4 for 59 hearings without a trial. Rajib Hossain, the son of Imandipur resident Mahbub Alam, has been in prison since Dec 6, 2003. He has appeared before the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court – 4 on 44 working days without trial.
