5 extortionists get life imprisonment in Khulna

Five extortionists rewarded life imprisonment by a trial court here on Wednesday on charge of killing a youth under Batiaghata upazila in the district on June 06 in 2003.
Judge of the Additional Session Judge Court of Khulna Md. Al Mamun found them guilty of the charge and declared the verdict.
Among the five, three convicts were present at the court. They were Shaheen, son of Nuru Howlader, Edris, son of Abdus Sattar and Monir, son of Abdul Haque, residents in Tootpara area in the city. The absconding remained two convicts were Moin, son of Abdus Sattar and Zahidul Islam alias Zahid, son of Tara Miha, residents in the same area.
The court also fined Taka 10,000 each of the convicts, in defaults they would have sentenced more six months imprisonment.
According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that a gang of extortionists demanded extortion Tk 2 lakhs at gun point from Alamgir’s father Omor Ali Gazi, an employee of Bangladesh Bank, in the last week of May in 2003, saying that he couldn’t construct the new residence without paying extortion.
Omor Ali Gazi started construction of a new building in Tootpara area after getting a house loan from the Bangladesh Bank.
Afterwards, the extortionists took Tk. 20,000 from Omor and threatened him to pay Tk 1 lakh more by June 01 in 2003.
At the deadline, they came to Omor for collecting extortion, but his son Alamgir refused to meet their demand. The criminals left the place threatening Alamgir that he would be killed. On June 6, 2003, criminals abducted Alamgir at gun point at Mohirbari Khalpar in Tootpara area, around 500 yards away from his residence.
The body was found in Harintana beel area under Batiaghata upazila in the district on the following day with several injury marks by bullet and sharp weapon.
His father Omor Ali filed a murder case with Batiaghata Police Station in this connection accusing 16 people on the next day.
After the investigation Sub Inspector Al Imran of district detective police pressed charged against five on September 02, 2004.
After examining the recorded deposition of the enlisted prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences the court handed down the verdict yesterday.
