Five meritorious students of Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ) Department of Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday received ‘Editor Abdus Salam Memorial Scholarship’ for their outstanding academic results in BSS honours final examinations of 2014.
Besides, journalist Shahed Kamal was awarded ‘Editor Abdus Salam Trust Fund Lifetime Achievement Award’ in recognition to his significant contributions to the field of journalism, said a DU press release.
The DU Vice Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique distributed cheques for scholarship money among the students at a function, organized by the MCJ Department at Mozaffar Ahmed Chowdhury auditorium on the campus.
The awardees are — Faruq Hossain, Md Jahidur Rahman, Md Mahmudul Hasan, Najmul Hasan and Hosneyara.
Addressing the function as chief guest, Professor Arefin stressed on ‘positive journalism’ and said journalists have to work relentlessly with honesty and courage to establish truth in society.
He urged the students to improve the profession of journalism by following the ideals of journalists like late Abdus Salam and ABM Musa.
DU Treasurer Professor Md Kamal Uddin presided over the function while the MCJ Department Chairperson Professor Md. Mofizur Rahman addressed it as the special guest.
Rehana Salam, daughter of late editor Abdus Salam, and family members of renowned journalist late ABM Musa were present at the function.
MCJ Department Honorary Professor Sakhawat Ali Khan delivered ‘Editor Abdus Salam Memorial Lecture’ at the function while Associate Professor Robaet Ferdous conducted it.
Late ABM Musa had donated an amount of money to the DU authorities for setting up ‘Editor Abdus Salam Trust Fund’ at the MCJ department in the memory of his father-in-law.
