Md Joynal Abedin Khan :
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in a drive detained five persons in the city’s Kafrur area on Tuesday on charge of making fake papers for motor vehicles by using the name of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) for more than 12 years.
A large number of vehicles are on the roads by drivers using fake documents, including falsified driving licenses.
They also seized a huge cache of fake BRTA documents, computers, stamps, seal etc.
The arrestees are Abdul Khaleq, 67,
Anwarul Haque Shimul, 42, Abdul Jalil, 64, Abdur Rahim, 31, and Motaleb Hossain, 58, police said.
“A lot of the time, the drivers do not even know they are using fake documents,” Abdul Baten, Additional Commissioner of the DMP’s Detective Branch, said at a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre on Wednesday.
The press briefing was held after five people were arrested in Kafrul area of Dhaka, on Monday evening, for using fake documents.
“The ring prepares these documents almost perfectly,” Baten said. “It is hard to differentiate, and thus confiscate the false papers. Since DMP is well-trained, it is easier for them to detect the counterfeits; it is much harder in places outside of Dhaka.”
In a few cases, the drivers of vehicles using the fake papers in district towns saw their documents seized and sent to Dhaka for verification, Baten said.
BRTA must be more cautious about these fake papers, he said. “The tendency to use fake documents is increasing due to the long time period needed to obtain them from the government agency.”
A lot of the time, these rings dupe their customers into believing they are receiving original documents. Since it is relatively easier to obtain these papers and they are processed more quickly, people naturally turn to these rings to get their registration, or license documents, according to him
During primary interrogation, DB got to know that the ring acts like a one-stop service. “They forge all kinds of documents, including fitness papers and registration number plates, at a small cost. All documents require Tk 5,000-6,000.”
Among the arrestees, Shimul and Jalil had been arrested before, on the same charges.
A case has been filed against them with the Kafrul Police Station, he said, “We are investigating the matter and trying to determine the others involved in the ring.”
