Five people died and two others fell sick reportedly after drinking spirit mixed with liquor at Mohammadnagar village in Companiganj upazila on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Mohin Uddin, son of Foyez Ahmed, of Mohammadnagar village, Noor Nabi Manik, Robi Lal Roy, son of Anil Roy of Basurhat Municipality, Abdul Khaleque of Tekerbazar area in Charkakra union and Sajub, of Sirajpur union.
Witnesses said, they bought spirit from Rafiq Homeo Hall shop near Pan Bazar adjacent to Basurhat Bazar and drank it after mixing with liquor. Confirming the deaths, Arifur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Companiganj Police Station, said he visited the area. The family members had buried three bodies before police reached there, the OC said adding that they have sent a body to the police station after recovering it.
The OC also said the cause of the deaths will be known after autopsy. Two people, including the son of the spirit seller, have been detained.
