5 devotees die during 2nd phase of Ijtema

A total of five devotees have died during the second phase of the three-day Biswa Ijtema, which started on the banks of Turag River in Tongi, on the outskirts of the capital, on Friday morning.
Four people died on the first day while another died late on Thursday, said Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur police Manzur Rahman, the spokesperson for the Ijtema police control room.
Kazi Alauddin, 66, who travelled from Sunamganj to Ijtema venue, died of old age complications on Thursday.
The four others who died the next day have been identified as Uttara resident 85-year-old Ilias Miah, 65-year-old Abdus Sobhan from Gaibandha, 65-year-old Humayun Kabir from Rangpur, and Jhenaidah’s AFM Jahurul Alam, 62. All of them died due to old-age complications and cardiac diseases, according to the police control room.
The second phase of the Ijtema began with ‘Aam Bayan’ (general sermons) on Friday.
 The ‘Akheri Munazat’ (final prayers) will mark the end of the Ijtema on Sunday.
Earlier, the first phase of the Ijtema began on January 10 at the same venue and ended on January 12.
Tablig Jamaat has been organizing the Ijtema, the second largest Muslim congregation of the world, at this venue since 1967.
