Five Houston police officers were injured and two suspects killed in a shooting Monday afternoon.
Two of the officers were in surgery and in critical condition, police Chief Art Acevedo said at a news conference Monday evening.
The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. in the 7800 block of Harding Street in southeastern Houston, according to police. Acevedo said that about a dozen narcotics officers who were following a tip from a neighbor about possible drug sales were serving a search warrant, backed up by a half-dozen patrol officers. As they breached the front door, the officers came under fire from one or two people inside with semiautomatic weapons, Acevedo said. Four were struck, and a fifth officer suffered a knee injury.
An unknown number of officers returned fire, killing two people inside the home. Authorities have not released their names. “One of the calls you never want to get as chief is you’ve had officers shot,” Acevedo said.
Two officers were taken to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center by helicopter and three by ambulance. Their names have not been released.
The officers in critical condition were both struck in the neck, Acevedo said. The chief said that the 54-year-old case agent on the investigation, who was not in critical condition, had previously been shot in the line of duty.
An officer who was shot in the shoulder was discharged Monday night, police said. The two officers in critical condition and the two in good condition, including the officer with the knee injury, were expected to remain hospitalized overnight. Mayor Sylvester
Turner praised the officers and commended the paramedics and firefighters who helped rush them to safety. “This has been a tough day for our city, but I certainly want to encourage all Houstonians to pray for all of our police officers” and their families, Turner said.
Shortly after the shootings, multiple helicopters landed in a nearby parking lot to transport the wounded to hospitals. Aerial footage showed traffic being blocked to clear a path for ambulances.
Acevedo described the scene as “fluid” more than an hour later as authorities continued to investigate. A several-block radius around the scene was blocked off, and police advised residents to avoid the area.
