Launch capsize: 5 accused put on remand

A court in Munshignaj remanded five accused of ‘MV SKL-3’ lighter cargo ship, which was responsible for hitting the passenger launch ‘Sabit Al Hasan’ in the Shitalakshya river in Narayanganj on April 4, for two days.
At the same time, the court rejected the bail pleas of the other nine accused and directed to send them to jail.
Earlier, police produced five of the accused in the court of Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Humayun Kabir seeking remand for seven days on Friday afternoon. The court granted remand to each of them for two days after the hearing.
The remanded accused are MV SKL-3 ship master Ohiduzzaman, driver Majnu Mollah, sukani Anwar Mallik, Hridoy Hawladar and Farhan Mollah.
Narayanganj court police inspector Asaduzzaman confirmed the matter.
Earlier on Thursday afternoon, after arresting the accused from Gazaria area of Munshiganj, the Coast Guard authorities handed them over to the Narayanganj Naval Police Station in the evening. The accused were kept in the custody of Sadar Naval Police Station till 4 pm on Friday.
‘Sabit Al Hasan’ sank with over 50 passengers on board in the river Shitalakshya on April 4 after being hit by the cargo ship ‘MV SKL-3’ that left as many as 34 men, women and children dead.
Babu Lal Boidya, deputy director of the BIWTA Narayanganj, filed a murder case with Bandar Police Station in Narayanganj on Tuesday night.
