The Election Commission (EC) has identified 5.3 lakh dual voters, enlisted in EC’s server at more than one places.
EC has disclosed the information recently after a meeting chaired by EC Commissioner Brigadier General Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury(retd.) for use of Information Technology (IT) in NID cards, voter list and election engineering system.
According to voter database server, till February, 2021, there are about 5, 29,806 dual voters in the country .
Meeting sources said, in the first phase, instructions have been given in the field level to file a case in the name of 1,057 people. Of these, 556 cases have been filed against dual voters till last January. Cases are pending in the names of the remaining 527 people.
In the meeting some decision has been taken to solve the problem and formed a committee. These are-the committee will submits advises for preventing to getting dual voters, the committee also will give advises to take legal action and about reform law that dual voters those who gave false information for any evil purpose.
When talked over the problem of dual voter list, EC’s NID wing Director (Operations) Md Nuruzzaman Talukder said, we are working on this issue that as to how to solve the problems.
Meanwhile, EC gears up the process to have voter’s permanent addresses.
EC said, during voter enlistment the people wrote both temporary and permanent addresses. Especially, it was done in the big cities like Dhaka and Chattogram. Later they changed their addresses and for that it is possible to get the NID cards to the citizens
Over the issue NID Wing Director General (DG) A K M Humayun Kabir said, I myself have called many people collecting the phone numbers from the voter registration form. But, many of those who became voters at the time gave other people’s phone or mobile numbers. As a result, they can no longer be found. Someone told me that the person who gave me the personal phone number is currently living in the United States.
According to EC, there are 11, 17, 20, 669 voters in the country. Of them 5, 65, 98, 05 are male voters and 5, 51, 22,223 are females and 441 third gender voters. Earlier, the constitutional institution did not charge for NID lost and correction. However, from September 1, 2015 the EC had charging for those services.
