A total of 4,896 women and girls were subjected to multiple forms of torture throughout the country in 2016, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad said.
Of them, 1,050 women were raped last year.
The statistics say that 44 women were murdered after rape and 166 were victims of gang-rape, according to the speakers of the voluntary organisation working for women. The number of gang-rapes was 199 in 2015.
The organisation disclosed the statistics at a press conference in its office in the capital’s Segunbagicha.
Apart from above, 120 women faced sexual harassment last year, they said.
According to the report – based on news in 14 dailies, the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) said,
there were 165 rape attempts on women in 2016. This number was 142 in 2015.
About 120 women were molested, and 80 became victims of sexual harassment in 2016.
The report exposes that 2016 was the worst year for women of the last four years in terms of several forms of violence.
