UNB, Moulvibazar :
Forty-eight primary schools in Barlekha, an upazila of Moulvibazar district in
Sylhet, have been found running without a head teacher, hampering the regular academic activities of the students badly.
Sources at the Upazila Education Office said there are 149 government primary schools in the upazila and 48 of them have no head teacher, as the recruitment process for head teachers or promoting assistant teachers has been suspended for several years.
Visiting some of the schools in the upazila recently, the UNB correspondent found that assistant teachers were discharging the duties of the head teachers, acting as substitutes alongside their regular academic jobs.
Contacted, upazila primary education officer M Jalal Uddin said he has “no idea as yet” as to how many schools are facing head teacher crisis in Barlekha as he has only recently taken the charge.
District primary education officer M Abdul Alim meanwhile, said he has sent a list of assistant teachers to the Directorate of Primary Education to be promoted to fill the vacant posts of the head teachers, but no action has been taken yet in this regard.
