Bid to kidnap DRU president: 48-hr ultimatum to arrest culprits

The journalist leaders have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government and the police administration to arrest the culprits who attempted to kidnap Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) President Shaheed Chowdhury. Tougher action programme will be announced if the demand is not realised within the deadline, they threatened.
The journalists said it at a demonstration rally in front of the National Press Club, arranged by the DRU protesting the attempt to kidnap the DRU president from the capital’s Bijoy Swarani on Sunday evening.
President of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Shaukat Mahmud, President of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) Abdul Hye Sikder, General Secretary of another faction Kuddus Afrad, Press Club General Secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed, DRU General Secretary Elias Khan, Organising Secretary Mursalin Nomani and President of Crime Reporters’ Association Akhtaruzzaman Lablu addressed the rally, among others.
Before the rally, the journalists brought out a procession from in front of the Press Club, which ended at the same venue after parading different city roads. The journalists also blocked the road for some times.
Besides, BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir protested and condemned the incident. In a statement, he said, “The abduction attempt has proved that journalists have no freedom in collecting and publishing news.
