A total of 45,080 affected farmers of the district got free seed and fertilizers from the government during the current robi season under post flood agriculture rehabilitation programme.
Office sources said the district was hit by repeated floods in August and September causing the standing crops particularly T-Aman paddy on 43,000 hectares of land damaged making the growers more worried about their food security.
In order to recoup the losses caused by floods the Ministry of Agriculture took decision to provide seeds of different crops and chemical fertilizers- Di-ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Muriate of Potash (MoP) to the farmers under the programme, sources said.
Accordingly, as many as 45,080 farmers of all the seven upazilas in the district were selected and the department of agriculture extension (DAE) implemented the seed and fertilizer distribution activities in field level, said an official of DAE.
Of them, some 9,665 farmers were selected in Sadar upazila, 4,155 in Sadullapur upazila, 1,475 in Palashbari upazila, 3,985 in Gobindaganj upazila, 4,815 in Sundarganj upazila, 8,400 in Shaghata upazila, and 12,585 in Fulchhari upazila, he also said.
Deputy Director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin said the distribution activities of seeds and fertilizers to the farmers here had been completed smoothly in the district and after getting seed; the farmers had already gone to crop farming.
