The government has planned to dredge 450 kilometers of 38 rivers across the country in this fiscal year.
A standing committee’s meeting in the Parliament Bhaban of the Ministry of Shipping revealed it on Tuesday.
The meeting sources said, about 31.28 percent work of the plan has been completed.
The committee stressed that all the future projects of the ministry and its associate bodies will look after people’s interest and welfare. The meeting also recommended to place all project proposals before this Parliamentary committee for enlistment in development project proposals (DPP).
Participants of the meeting discussed about the present conditions of the rivers of the country.
Major (Rtd) Rafiqul Islam, the President of the committee presided over the meeting.
Committee members Mahfuzur Rahman, Ranjit Kumar Roy and M Abdul Latif participated in the meeting.
They also emphasized on ensuring navigability of all major naval routes.
The committee has given focus on loss of navigability in different rivers, which should be addressed.
The crisis delays goods carrying and increase costs.
