Chattogram Bureau:
There are 45 markets and 300 multi-storey buildings in Chittagong city at fire risk. Although letters were sent from the fire service to these risky buildings and markets, the traders did not respond. Later, red signboards were put up to mark the markets and buildings, but nothing was done.
According to the building code, every business has three levels of fire safety, but none of the major shopping malls in the city have fire safety equipment. Not only that, most of the traders did not come under fire license.
According to fire service sources, there are about 45 risky markets, big and small, based on the area of 6 fire stations in the city. Among the most risky markets are Municipal Zahur Hawkers Market, Teri Bazar, Riazuddin Bazar, Tamakumandi Lane, Khatunganj, Ashadganj, Chalpatti and Shutkipatti. Roads in some of these markets are so narrow that fire service vehicles are not allowed to enter.
There is also no source of water to put out the fire. The upper part of some buildings is also being used as residential. It can be seen that the electricity wires are scattered in the markets and buildings.
