Nirapad Sarak Chai (NSC) claimed that about 4,439 people were killed and 4,425 others critically injured in 3,103 road crashes across the country in 2018.
Ilias Kanchan, Founder and Chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai (We Demand Safe Road) camping group disclosed the statistics of casualties at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital on Tuesday.
But on the other hand, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity claimed a few days ago that around 7,221 people were killed last year which is significantly larger than this statistics.
At the same time, Ilias Kanchan earnestly requested the government “to declare war on road crashes.”
Replying to a question, he said: “The government doesn’t hold trial of the road accidents because they fear owners and transport workers.
Ilias Kanchan also pointed out that illiterate drivers, unfit vehicles, weak traffic management system, careless people and lack of legal actions were causes of the casualties.
About 5,645 people died and 7,908 others were seriously injured in 3349 incidents of road crashes in 2017.
