42,150 SIM cards used for illegal VoIP acts; 24 held

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has seized 42,150 SIM cards with equipment worth Tk 1.23 crore in Dhaka and Chattogram.
Of the SIMs, 16,812 were of Robi and Airtel; 15,939 were of Teletalk; 6,176 of Banglalink and 3,233 of Grameenphone, said Md zahirul Haque, BTRC Acting Chairman, in a press conference at its Headquarters in the city on Sunday.
They also arrested 24 people on charge of running Illegal VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocols ) acts , he said.
The BTRC conducted drives with law en forcers between October 14 and November 1 and seized, the Chairman said.
According to him, these SIM cards and equipment were used for illegally routing international calls through VoIP, which causes a huge loss to the state.
“Now, we are using latest technology to determine illegal transmission of the international calls,” said Zahirul Haque.
The authorities also have filled 28 cases in this connection under Telecommunication Act 2001.
