Diplomatic Correspondent :
Some 420 Rohingya people have become victims of human trafficking in last two years from Cox’s Bazar areas despite monitoring on their movement, according to an assessment of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
The IOM presented a paper at a consultative workshop at a hotel in Dhaka on Saturday with Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque inaugurating it.
According to IOM’s information, the trafficking situation in Cox’s Bazar district has worsened since the beginning of the latest Rohingya influx in August 2017 and the total number of victims is 420 till June 2019.
Common people are also being trafficked from Bangladesh alongside Rohingya refugees, added the IOM.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Home Affairs Abu Bakar Siddique and Resident Coordinator of UN Mia Seppo spoke at the programme
M Shahidul Haque said, “Bangladesh has decided to sign the UN Palermo Protocol. This way, hopefully, we will play a role in preventing human trafficking.”
“Immigration and human trafficking are two completely different things,” he said, adding that “We are against human trafficking, but in favour of safe immigration.”
Mia Seppo said they welcome Bangladesh’s decision to sign the UN Palermo Protocol. The UN is ready to provide all kinds of assistance to implement the process.
