Police in a drive detained 42 people along with huge weapons from a hostel of the capital’s Mirpur Government Bangla College in the night of Tuesday and Wednesday. Thirty-two of then were, however, released afterward.
Darussalm Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam said that a team of police raided the hostel at 10:00 pm on Tuesday night and left it at 12:30am on Wednesday night. All the rooms of the hostel were searched.
The police recovered one foreign pistol, 14 rounds of bullet, one magazine, one toy pistol, one damaged pistol, 21 machetes and eight pieces of iron rods. All of them are being interrogated at the police station, the OC said, refusing to disclose their political affiliations. The detainees are youths in age, mostly students of the capital’s other educational institutions and outside.
Regarding the motive of the drive, the OC said “It was conducted as part of precautionary steps against conspiracy.” After quizzing, Police released 32 youths. The remaining 10 would be prosecuted if found guilty of plotting.
An executive magistrate and some top officials of the police’s Mirpur division were present at that time. Jasimuddin, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Mirpur division), led the search.
