Detective Branch (DB) of Police have recovered 41 vehicles and arrested 16 car hijackers including its gang leader, in separate drives across the country during the month of March.Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said this at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre on Wednesday.Those arrested were identified as Abbas Ali alias Nayon, Faruque Hossain, Dipu, Nayan, Yunus, Mustafizur Rahman alias Mustaq, Selim, Akhash, Toffazzal Hossain, Abdur Rahman, Nazrul Islam, Amir, Babu, Billal Khan and Nayon Mia.Hijacking of cars, Islam said, has increased alarmingly across the county. Sometimes stolen car owners negotiate with the hijackers without informing the police to get back their stolen cars, he said adding during the last two weeks police recovered 22 cars, 18 CNG auto-rickshaws and one motorbike.The hijackers establish friendship with drivers and gradually taking advantage of the relationship, they hijack the vehicles, police said. Sometimes drivers are also involved in the crime.Tofazzal and Selim during primary interrogation have made confessional statements, police said adding they maintain a gang of at least one dozen hijackers.Police, he said, have been tying to arrest the remaining members of the gang. If any member of the gang is caught others become alert and go into hiding for some days, Monirul Islam said.Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner (DMP) Masudur Rahman told The New Nation robbers are gradually showing interest in old model cars as these are not equipped with security device. After securing bail, the criminals become active again, he said adding car owners should install security device in their cars.
