In total 409 pedestrians were killed on roads and highways in 398 accidents in January-March this year.
Of them, 246 were males, 66 females, and 97 were children, said a report revealed by Road Safety Foundation.
The report was prepared based on information from seven national dailies, five online news portals, and electronic media.
According to the report, 213 of 398 (53.52 percent) accidents happened when victims were walking on the roads, and 185 (46.48 percent) incidents happened while victims were crossing the road.
Also, 183 pedestrians died in 179 incidents (44.97 percent) of vehicles hitting people, with 225 people dead overall in 219 incidents of road crashes.
The report illustrated two major reasons behind the incidents — 63.80 percent happened due to reckless driving, and 38.19 percent occurred due to carelessness of the pedestrians.
Of the deceased, 33.72 percent died in Dhaka division, 15.29 percent died in the Rajshahi division, 14.90 percent died in Chattogram division, 9.80 percent in Khulna division, 6.27 in Barisal division, 4.70 percent in Sylhet division, 6.66 percent in Rangpur division, and 8.62 percent died in Mymensingh division.
