More than 4000 kilograms (kg) of rice meant for distribution through ration shops were seized by police from a private godown at Batteshwar Bazar in Sylhet on Thursday night.
The owner of the godown is Wadud Bhuiyan, police sources said.
The rice was being packed in 87 sacks diverted from the Food Department’s godown was meant to be sold at Tk 10 per kg under ‘Food Friendly Programme for the Ultra-Poor,’ Md Shahjalal Munshi, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sylhet’s Shah Paran Police Station told The New Nation on Friday night.
He said the godown was raided on the basis of a tip-off received by the police.
“Police are yet to arrest the godown owner as he went into hiding. We are preparing a case in this regard,” said the OC.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the ‘Food Friendly Programme for the Ultra-Poor on September 7.
Irregularities over the rice distribution came to the light just after beginning of the programme.
The government earlier cancelled licences of 44 dealers across the country after irregularities in rice distribution by them have been proven.
Six people have so far held in 11 corruption cases since the inauguration of the programme.
