Staff Reporter :A four-year-old female child was killed and five others were injured in a devastating fire at Battala slum under Mohammadpur in the city on Sunday.The deceased has been identified as Fatema Akhter, daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver Joynal Abedin hailing from Madaripur district.The fire also gutted at least 400 shanties. Mohammad Azizul Haque, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station, told The New Nation over cell phone that the body of Fatemawas recovered by fire fighters from a gutted shanty of the slum at 12:30pm. The police officer could not say anything about the origin of the fire. Golam Mostafa, Operator of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters, said that the fire broke out around 8:30 am. On information, 10 fire fighting units from Lalbagh, Mohammadpur, Palassey and the headquarters reached the spot and tamed the flames after one and a half hours efforts.
