Four more Rohingya-carrying boats have been intercepted at the Naf River in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila while trying to enter Bangladesh illegally, claims Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The boats were spotted around 4am on Friday at different points of the Naf River. They were carrying at least 40 people, said Teknaf-based BGB 2 Battalion’s Deputy Commander Maj Abu Rasel Siddiqui.
“BGB patrol teams pushed them back into Myanmar from zero point,” he said.
A large number of Rohingyas, a minority Muslim community in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, had been trying to enter Bangladesh via different
border points to escape an army crackdown initiated in October.
According to local and international media reports, a large number of Rohingyas, including women and children, have been entering Bangladesh through different border routes, although BGB has denied such claims.
The paramilitary force claims that vigilance has been intensified at the border.
Maj Rasel told bdnews24.com that since Oct 21 BGB had turned away a total of 84 boats carrying Rohingyas from the border of Bangladesh. The Myanmar army swooped on the Rohingya community in the volatile Rakhine state of Myanmar after nine police officers were killed at three police outposts along Myanmar’s border with Bangladesh on Oct 9.
