A court here sentenced four individuals accused of human trafficking to life terms in prison for trafficking two girls to India in 2008 on Wednesday.
The convicts are Nazrul Islam, his wife Fuljan Bibi and Kartik Chandra Haldar – hailing from Helatala village of Kalaroa upazila in Satkhira, and Nur Hossain of another village in the district.
Human trafficking tribunal judge TM Musa passed the verdict wherein he acquitted five other accused due to lack of evidence against them.
Quoting case statement, special PP of the court Idris Ali said Nazrul and his accomplices used to live in a rented house at Chandipur village of Bagharpara upazila in Jashore where they came to work. However, they hit upon a plan and trafficked two daughters of their landlord to India with the lure of good jobs.
Later, a victim’s father filed a human trafficking case with Bagharpara police station accusing nine people.
After scrutinizing records and witnesses, the court passed the order sentencing four people to life term imprisonment and also fined them Tk 10000 each, in default, to suffer six more months in jail.
Under another section of the same law, the tribunal judge sentenced the quartet more twelve years in jail.
They will face the two sentences at the same time.
