The authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) suspended four students for assaulting an assistant proctor of the university on the campus on Tuesday.
The suspended students were identified as Ariful Haque Sony, a fourth year student of Food Engineering and Tea Technology Department, Mehedi Hasan, fourth year student of the Statistics Department, and Nazrul Islam and Khalilur Rahman, third year and second year students respectively of the Sociology Department.
Sources at the university said the decision came from a disciplinary board meeting held on Tuesday.
On Saturday evening, when an altercation ensued between two groups of the university’s students, including the four, in front of the food court of the university, Assistant Proctor Mirajul Islam obstructed them.
At one stage, the students hit Mirajul, leaving him injured.
The students were punished also for various complaints against them.
The proctoreal body of the university at a meeting recommended suspension of the four students.
A one-member probe body, headed by Prof Dr Zakir Hossain of the Statistics Department, has been formed to look into the incident, said Proctor Himadri Shekhor Ray.
