Teachers assault: 4 students suspended by SUST

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) authorities on Tuesday suspended four students on charge of their involvement in assaulting teachers on the campus.
All the four students are the workers of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of the ruling Awami League.
They are Ariful Alam and Zahid Hossain of the Forestry and Environmental Science Department, Dhoni Ram Roy of the Statistic Department and Abdullah Al Mamun of the Political Studies Department of the university.
Talking to journalists on Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan said that the university authorities took action against them as the students were found involved with attacking and assaulting the teachers.
“We have got the evidence after verifying video footage on the incident,” the VC said. Meanwhile on Monday, the BCL central committee suspended three leaders of SUST unit of BCL in this connection.
They are Abu Sayeed Akanda and Anjan Roy, senior vice-presidents of SUST unit of the BCL, and Sajedul Islam Sabuj, senior joint-secretary of the same unit.
BCL central committee president Saifur Rahman said that the unit’s central executive committee took the decision at its meeting on Monday night.
Besides, the committee served show cause notices on the suspended leaders, the president added.
Earlier on August 30, at least nine teachers were injured in an attack carried out on them by the BCL activists when they were staging demonstration under the banner of Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Parishad, demanding the resignation of the VC.
The teachers wearing black badges took out a procession on campus and staged a protest rally on Tuesday. They also observed three-hour work abstention programme.
Professor Dr Yesmeen Huq, wife of Professor Zafar Iqbal, Professor Mohammad Younus, former President of Teachers’ Association, Professor Abdul Gani incumbent General Secretary of Teachers’ Association, Professor ANK Samaddar, Professor Mostofa Kamal Masud, Professor Faruque Uddin, Professor Hassanuzzaman and Associate Professor had been assaulted by the BCL workers on that day.
