Four school students drowned while taking bath in city’s Ramna lake and Naraynganj’s Meghna River on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Adnan, 15, Mahfuj, 14, IX grader at Willes Little Flower School, Kakrail, and Yasin, 8, II grader at Haria Government Primary School, Yamin, 7, I grader at Moon Light Kinder Garten School in Sonargaon upazila of Naraynganj district. Quoting witness, Ramna Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Rais Uddin said, three students from the school went to take bathe in the lake after playing football. At one stage, all three became submerged in the water. One of them could swim and saved himself, but the other two didn’t know how to swim and eventually died.
Being informed, locals rushed to the lake and rescued one of the boys alive, but the other two were found unconscious.
The two were retrieved from the lake around 3:00pm and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared them dead, said DMCH Police Outpost Inspector Md Bachchu Mia.
In Narayanganj, two students went to Meghna river to take bath in Haria Gobinda area in Sonargaon upazila around 2:00pm. At one stage, they drowned in the river due to high tide.
Later, locals rescued the bodies of the two students around 3:00pm.
The bodies were handed over to their families.
