Hatirjheel Police arrested four members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on charges of kidnapping a man on Friday..
The arrested men were identified as Lance Corporal Dulal Mridha, Lance Corporal Md. Roney, soldier Rokon Mia and Sagar.
Police sources said, a young man named Tamjid Hossain (27) was picked up by RAB members. After the arrest, his sister was told on mobile phone that Tamjid could even be sent to the crossfire in case of nonpayment of Tk two crore.
According to victim sister Rayana Hossain’s statement, “Her elder brother Tamjid Hossain came out of residence around 9 am on Thursday morning for going to Uttara.
Suddenly an unknown person called me around 12 noon introducing himself as a senior RAB official and said that my elder brother is in RAB custody.
You should not inform it to the police or DB members. If you inform the police or DB police, then your elder brother may be killed. The phone line was cut off after saying this, she added.
“I tried to contact him on my mobile phone many times later. But the person who introduced me as a senior RAB officer repeatedly hung up my phone.
At around 1.30 pm, the man informed me on his mobile phone that my elder brother was being interrogated by senior officers at the RAB office. There will be filed arms and drug cases in his name.
“Later the sister was told to go to the city’s Jamuna Future Park Market with Tk 12 lakh if she did not have any money.
RAB spokesman Commander Khandaker Al Moin told the media that police had informed them that four RAB members had been arrested on the basis of a written complaint of abduction.
The four were handed over to them around 3.30 pm. They are investigating the incident.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)
Commissioner Mohammad Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest to the media saying that three of the four arrested were members of the army and one was a member of the Air Force.
Police said there were two more fugitives involved in the incident. One of them is a BGB member and the other is not a member of any law enforcement force. He is a civilian.
The DMP commissioner said that although regular cases were filed against the four arrested for money extortion, all four were handed over to their respective forces. They will be judged according to the laws of their respective forces.
