Police in a drive detained four suspected members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Shahbajpur in Rangpur Sadar upazila early Sunday.
They were identified as: Ershad Ali, 35, Belal Hossain, 45, Al-Amin, 23 and Ashraful Islam, 27. They all hail from Poshua Tangailpara, a village in the Itakumari Union of Peergacha Upazila in Rangpur.
Three policemen were also injured in blasts. They are Masud Karim, a
Sub-Inspector of Detective Branch of Rangpur, constables Md Asad and Md Kutub Uddin, police said.
Meanwhile, police recovered a pistol, four sharp weapons and three hand bombs from the spot.
Mizanur Rahman, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rangpur, said, “Acting on a tip-off, a police team of Rangpur Sadar raided an abandoned brickfield in Chaplardola area around 2:30am on Sunday. Later, police retaliated by firing six rounds and caught the alleged militants cordoning off the entire brick field area.
They gathered in the area to operate sabotage activities, the police official said. Raihan Kabir, who was among the nine militants killed in a Kallyanpur flat during a police raid, was from Tangailpara, the SP said.
Three separate cases were filed with the Kotwali Police Station in this connection, said Jahifur Rahman, OC of detective Branch of Rangpur. Kotwali police are investigating the cases, the OC said.
