The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) says it has detained four operatives of ‘JMB’s Sarwar-Tamim Group’, including its IT chief after raiding a ‘hideout’ of a five-storey building in the city’s Jatrabari area on Wednesday morning.
The arrested JMB men are: Ashfaque-e-Azam alias Apple, Mahbubur Rahman, Shahinuzzaman and Ashraful Islam.
The seizure includes two pistols, 21 rounds of ammunition, four sharp weapons, gun powder and bomb-making materials, RAB official said.
RAB’s Legal and Media Wing chief
Mufti Mahmud Khan said, “A team of the elite force cordoned off a house at Dholaipar in Jatrabari area around 3:00am. The raided second floor and arrested them with the fire arms and explosive materials.”
“They belong to the Sarwar-Tamin group of JMB. Of them, Ashfaque-e-Azam is the group’s IT expert. He was in charge of maintaining websites and providing technical support,” the RAB official said.
The elite force official said that Ashfaque graduated from a private university and got involved with militancy five years ago, according to RAB Man.
“Shahinuzzaman, another active member of the group, took militant training along with others at a house in Mirpur and some other areas and in Chittagong, he received training on the use of small firearms,” said Mufti Mahmud Khan.
Identifying themselves as construction workers, they rented the house in Jatrabari on January 21 for Tk 7000 per month and shifted here on January 23, the RAB official said.
The JMB men told the house owner that they would provide the IDs and pictures on February 1, the RAB official said.
Police also detained the house owner Sailu Begum, 45, and the ground-floor tenant Faruk for interrogation, said Saber Hossain Anas, younger son of Sailu Begum.
