Joynal Abedin Khan :
The members of Detective Branch (DB) of Police have claimed that they have identified four participants of the recent online political conference of banned militant outfit Hizb-ut Tahrir after analysing the video.
“The identified persons are Shibli Ahmed, Karim Abu Jahidiur, Chowdhury Mohammad Galib and Harunur Rashid.
Detectives are now trying to trace them,” Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told the New Nation on Sunday.
The law enforcers have arrested several members of the banned group ahead of the event for campaigning on the streets, but they did not prevent the conference “for the sake of investigation, the DB official said.
“We have identified a good number of speakers at the conference after analysing the video conference and arrest of its seven members, who actively took part at the conference,” he claimed. Monirul demanded that the group had organised the online conference to declare their presence at national and international levels.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees confessed their link to the militant outfit, he said, adding that they are now actively working to establish a Khilafat state.
They also admitted that they have long been working against the state as well as the government by giving anti-state post and statement on the internet, distributing leaflets and jihadi books, the DMP spokesman said.
The DB personnel also took screenshot of various anti-state activities on the internet, he said.
Although the conference was supposed to be aired live, the organisers uploaded a two-hour recorded video of the speeches after the scheduled time, sources said.
“Around 740 users logged in to the designated website but only 400 among them attended the whole session. Among them were journalists, police and intelligence officials,” they claimed.
Meanwhile, the DB cyber crime unit conducted a drive in the capital’s Khilkhet area on Saturday night and arrested seven members of the militant organization.
They are Ekramul Khayer alias Opu, Abdul Kaiyum, Nazmul Hasan alias Nipon, Ibrahim Shaikh, Rashedul Islam Shaikh, Ariful Islam and SM Tarek Amin. Huge number of leaflets, radical books and mobile phones were recovers from their possessions.
A case was filed under section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act. A Dhaka court later placed them each on a two-day remand.
Having branches in a number of countries, Hizb ut-Tahrir started its activities in Bangladesh in 2000 and was banned in 2009 for its involvement in militant activities.
