A court here on Wednesday sentenced a man and three others to life term imprisonment for killing his elder brother over land dispute in 2005.
The convicts were identified as Ayat Ali, 50, son of Azimuddin of Bhatkandi area in the district town, Abdul Khalek, 25, son of Abdullah, Abdul Matin, 24, son of Abul Hossain and Bulu Mia, 35, son of Salimuddin of Nandigram upazila in the district. Of them, Khalek, Matin and Bulu tried in absentia.
The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more in rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Ayat Ali had an enmity with his neighbour over a piece of land. As a sequel to the enmity, Ayat Ali along with three others called Abdur Rahman, elder brother of Ayat Ali to Bhatkandi area and strangled him to death to implicate his neighbour on April 25, 2005.
Police recovered the body from Bhatkandi area on the following day. Later, Moklesur Rahman, elder brother of Ayat Ali filed a case with Sadar Police Station.
Police submitted chargesheet against the four people on February 26, 2006.
After examining records and witnesses, Bogra Additional District and Session Judge handed down the verdict.
