Al-Asif Md. Anisuzzaman, Additional District and Session Judge-2 of Bagerhat, in a judgment delivered on Monday, convicted 4 persons including a former Councilor of Bagerhat Pourashava and sentenced them to suffer rigorous imprisonment for life and to pay a fine of Tk.25 thousand each in default to suffer another rigorous imprisonment for one year more on the charge of gang beating one to death suspectinmg him to be a thief. Two others were, however, acquitted of the charge for want sufficient evidences. All the accused persons were at the time of delivering the judgment.
The convicted persons are : Ohiduz Zaman Ohid, former Councilor of Ward No. 1 (Harinkhna-Harikhali area) of Bagerhat Pourashava and a member of Bagerhat district unit of BNP, Milon Shaikh, Ibrahim Shaikh and Helal Akon of the same area. Those who were acquitted are Dulal Akon and journalist Ariful Islam of the same area.
The prosecution story, in short, is that on May 25, 2007 Abdur Razzak alias Kala Khokon alias Kala Gazi, son of one late Minhaz Gazi of village Harinkhana within Ward No. 1 under Bagerhat Pourashava was gang beaten by the accused persons suspecting him to be a thief.
As a result, he was seriously ill. He was later admitted to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. In this connection Lutfor Rahman Gazi, brother of the deceased lodged a murder case with Bagerhat Model PS.
