A court here on Thursday sentenced four people to life imprisonment for killing an Awami League leader in Sadar upazila.
The convicts are: Atique Hossain, 38, son of Abdul Hamid Khan of Bakshipur village in Bharara union, Makbul Hossain, 55, son of Taher Amin of Harinarayanpur village in Gayespur union, Aslam Uddin, 37, son of Abdus Sattar of Jotgari Jalalpur village, and Turi Kana, 55, son of Abdul Gafur of Monaharpur village in the upazila. All of them were tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, the convicts first stabbed the Awami League leader Tareque Ali and gunned down him later in Jalalpur Bazar area of the upazila on February 26, 2005.
Later, victim’s brother Harun Khan filed a murder case against 11 people.
After examining the records and witnesses, Liakat Ali Mollah, judge of the Special Court, handed down the verdict acquitting two others.
