Staff Reporter :Four police personnel were killed and six others injured when a train rammed into a police van at Gola Hat Colony level crossing under Syedpur upazila in Nilpahamari district on Friday night.The victims are Syedpur Police Station constables Shamsul Haque, 32, Maidul Islam, 28, Shariful Islam, 32, and Faruk Hossain, 32.The injured Constable ‘Shamsul’ died at Syedpur Health Complex. The injured police personnel, including OC Ismail Hossain, were admitted to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition, police said. Syedpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Abdus Shahid said that a police van was rammed by Dhaka-bound Inter-city train Neel Sagor Express at Gola Hat Colony level crossing around 11:45pm.”SI ‘Kartik’ was on a motorcycle with another officer right beside the van during the accident. They were on their way to Porharhaat village to arrest a suspect. Kartik stopped the motorcycle seeing the train coming, but the police van driver tried to cross the tracks in a hurry. The train hit the vehicle when it had almost crossed the tracks,” the SI said.The level crossing was unguarded, the SI said.Tanzilur Rahman, Superintendent of Railway Police, said that the accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound ‘Neel Sagar Express’ smashed a police van, leaving one police constable dead on the spot and six others injured.Later the injured were rushed to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital where three of them died one after another at night.The railway authority has formed a four-member committee led by Shawkat Jamil Mohsin, Paksey Divisional Transport Officer (West) to investigate the incident, said Jakir Hsossian, Superintendent of Police (SP) in the district. The committee has been asked to submit the report to the Director General of Railway within a week, the SP said. A case had been filed in this connection, he said.
