4 cops among 5 hurt in clash with DU students

At least five people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash between the students of Dhaka University (DU) and the policemen at Nilkhet intersection on Friday over assaulting a DU student.
The DU students vandalized the gate, billboard of the New Market Police Station and the car of the officer-in-charge.
The injured have been identified as Mozammel Haque Bipul, student of Economics Department of DU, Sub-Inspectors
Shamim, Hanif and Iftekhar, constable Shamim of New Market Police Station and Ansar member Sobuj.
Eyewitnesses said that Mukit, a second year student of Bangla Department and resident of Sir AF Rahman Hall, and ASI Saifullah of New Market Police Station unnecessarily were locked into an altercation over a trivial matter in the area about 2pm.
At one stage of quarrel, ASI Saifullah slapped Mukit and took him to the police station along with his two friends, who came to help the DU student.
Hearing the news, the students of Sir AF Rahman Hall went to the police station and were locked into clashes with the law enforcers, leaving the five people injured. The student also vandalised the gate and billboard of the police station, said police officials.
Later police released the detained students, said DU students.
Dhaka University Proctor Amzad Ali said, “It was a misunderstanding between the students of DU and the policemen. We are looking into the matter.”
New Market Police Station Officer-in-Charge Yasir Arafat said: “The injured have been taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for primary treatment.”
